CLEAN BATTERY TERMINALS IN THE PROPER WAY

CLEAN BATTERY TERMINALS IN THE PROPER WAY.

Car batteries store electricity, which is what ignites the fuel that gets your engine moving. When the battery's terminals are covered in corrosion, electricity can't flow properly, leaving you stuck in your tracks.

Peek at the battery. Do you see a white, powdery substance on the metal terminals? That's corrosion. It could be causing your engine to not start or make it stall when idling.

Your car battery should last an average of four or more years, depending on the brand and capacity, with routine maintenance—and proper cleaning is essential. Here's how to clean battery terminals.

VEHICLE SYSTEM:-

Ignition, Charging, & Electrical Systems

SKILL LEVEL:-

Beginner

TIME TO COMPLETE:-

One and half hour

WHAT YOU''LL NEED:-

1.Disposable gloves

2.Goggles

3.Work apron

4.Metal pliers

5.Battery terminal cleaners

6.Wire brush

7.Spray bottles

8.Soft fabric towels

9.Petroleum jelly

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR CLEANING BATTERY TERMINALS :-

Since your skin and clothes may come in contact with corrosive materials, protective goggles, gloves, and a work smock are advisable. Avoid touching metal parts of the vehicle, including the metal frame or nearby parts, to reduce the risk of shorting out the battery

As you work, if you notice any crack or leaks in the battery, it's time to  replace this essential car parts. The same holds true for damage to the battery cables.

If you have a newer vehicle, you'll need to take some extra precautions before disconnecting the battery, as some must be hooked up to a 12V battery source, like a jump box through the OBD port.

Check your owner's manual or head to your local automotive repair shop to confirm that your vehicle doesn't have a special procedure for disconnecting the battery.

1.
Reference your owner's manual to locate the car battery. Most are at the front of the vehicle, near the engine. Some cars place the battery at the rear, in the trunk area. Still others may require you to pull the driver's side front wheel and fender well for access.

2.
Turn the car off and raise the hood using the release lever or button. It's best to tackle this project after the car has cooled for at least 30 minutes.

3.
Slip on your safety goggles, work gloves, and protective apron.

4.
How to disconnect a car battery: Remove the rubber or plastic covers that protect the points where the battery cables connect to the battery terminals. There are two covers to remove.

5.
Identify the negative terminal. It should be labeled with a minus symbol or a black terminal cover. Use a pair of pliers or a socket wrench to loosen the clamp.

6.
Remove the clamp from the positive terminal. It will be labeled with a plus symbol or have a red cover.

7.
To clean corrosion off the battery: Follow the instructions on a bottle of  battery terminal cleaners application.
After you spray the product on the terminals and clamps, you may notice a foaming reaction.

8.
Use a wire brush to gently loosen the corrosion on the terminals and clamps. Scrub the terminals and clamps down to bare metal.

9.
Aim a spray bottle filled with water at the clamps and terminals to rinse away remaining foam and corrosion.

10.
Dry each terminal and clamp with a soft, clean cloth.

11.
Apply a thin layer of battery terminal protectant each terminal to prevent future corrosion.

12.
Reattach the clamp to the positive terminal first. Then, attach the remaining clamp to the negative terminal.

13.
Replace both terminal covers and close the car hood. Your batteries terminals are now free of corrosion, and your car should start with a turn of the key.

The proper way to clean your cars Engine

The proper way to clean your cars Engine:

Most drivers find it difficult to clean their engine, so we have come up with a number of ways which should help when cleaning your engine.

You can clean any engine with the following common products:

1.Soft fiber towels

2.Brushes

3.Paint Markers

4.Spray wax

5.Soapy water

6.Pipe cleaner

7.Trim cleaner

3 Simple steps to clean your engine:

1.Preparation

2.Dry clean

3.Wet clean

Preparation: Before you start cleaning your engine remove the battery from the car.

Make sure you don’t get water on the following:

1.Alternator and distributor

2.Engine Oil

3.Behind any plastic

4.Spark plugs

5.Brake and power steering reservoirs

Dry Clean:
Clean the dust of the top of the engine using an  air vacuum  and brush. They should take 5 minutes. You can clean the intake using a metal wired brush or a rotary tool.

Wet Clean:
For this, you’ll need a hose. You can clean a warm or cold engine, but if you decide to clean a warm engine make sure you can place your hand comfortably on the intake.

You should never pour cold water on a hot engine because it can crack engine parts.

You can use the following items to clean your engine:

1.Hose

2.Cleaning wipes

3.Soapy Water

4.Garbage bag

5.Micro soft fiber towel

Firstly, you want to cover your engine with a garbage bag.

Start by cleaning the hood then continue by cleaning outside the engine bay.

You can hose the hood liner and can also spray soapy water around the painted surface to remove the dirt and grease. Finally, rinse everything down with water.

Secondly, before removing the bag you should clean the outside of the engine bay with water and a cleaning wipe, but notice that do not use a high pressure hose, and ensure you rinse off the dirt and debris.

To clean tight spots of the engine you can use a brush and a pipe cleaner. Repeat the same process on other parts of the engine.

Usually, you would split the engine in two and start cleaning (for example, passengers side or drivers side).

We recommend you start cleaning from the front to the back. You should not use a hose to clean the engine.

Next remove the intake so you can protect it.

Clean engine:
Remove any grease and oil with a cleaning wipe soapy water and brush. For hard to reach areas you can use a tooth brush or pipe cleaner to absorb the soapy water. To do this, you should use a  fiber towels.  Lastly, clean the rest of the engine with the towel.

Detailing:

You can use fabric dye to restore the hood liner

You can use  spray wax to clean around the hood and engine.

To detail the rubber or plastic surface, you can use a water based trim restorer.  This is non greasy, wont collect dust,  rejuvenates and protects the rubber and plastic.

Don’t use any oil or greasy products to restore the engine:

Apply a small amount or trim restorer and spread it around your engine bay.

Don’t apply this product on your belt.

Remove the trim restorer with a microfiber towel.

Lastly, you can use a paint marker to restore the faded lettering on caps.

Now your engine should now look brand new!

What is ABS (Anti-Lock Breaking System) ?

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

It is a safety system in automobiles. It prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The purpose of this is to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, in some situations, to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to hit the brake fully without skidding or loss of control).

How Do Wheels Lock?

During braking, wheels lock if the brake force applied is more than the friction between the road and tyre. This often happens in a panic braking situation, especially on a slippery road. When the front wheels lock, the vehicle slides in direction of motion. When the rear wheels locks, the vehicle swings around. It is impossible to steer around an obstacle with wheels locked. Locked wheels can thus result in accident. Skidding also reduce tyre life.

What Does ABS Do?

The system detects when the wheel are about to lock and momentarily release the pressure on locking wheel. The brakes are reapplied as soon as the wheels have recovered.
A toothed wheel (pole wheel) is fitted to the rotating wheel hub. A magnetic sensor mounted on each wheel in close in close proximity to the teeth, generates electrical pulses when the pole wheel rotates. The rate at which the pulses are generated (frequency) is a measure of wheel speed. This signal is read by electronic control unit (ECU). When a wheel is lock, the ECU sends an electrical signal to the modulator valve solenoid, which release pressure from the brake chamber. When the wheel recovers sufficiently, the brake pressure is reapplied again by the switch off signal to the modulator valve.
The modulator valve has an addition ‘hold’ state which maintains pressure. In break in the chamber, thus optimizing the braking process. The cycling of modulator valve (5 to 6 times per second) is continued till the vehicle comes to a controlled stop.
With ABS, the vehicle remains completely stable even when the driver continues to press the brake pedal during braking, thus avoiding accidents.

Components:

The anti-lock braking system consists of following components.

Wheel Speed Sensor
The wheel speed sensor consists of a permanent magnet and coil assembly. It generates electrical pulses when the pole wheel rotates. The rate at which the pulses are generated is a measure of wheel speed. The voltage induced increases with the speed of rotation of the wheel and reduces with increasing gap between the pole wheel and the sensor.

Pole Wheel
Pole Wheel is a toothed wheel made of ferrous material. It normally has teeth on the face. In some cases where it is not possible to install the sensor parallel to the axle, the pole wheels are designed with teeth on periphery. The pole wheel fitted on standard 9-20, 10-20 tires has normally 100 evenly spaced teeth. 80 evenly spaced teeth pole wheels are used for the vehicles having the tyre diameter less than 9mm.

Sensor Extension Cable
The sensor extension cable is a two core cable which connects the wheel speed sensor to the Electronic Control Unit. The inner core sheathing is of EPDM rubber and the outer sheathing is polyurethane which provide abrasion resistance to the cable. The cable has a module plug with two pins is connected to the control assembly. The cable has two cores-brown and black in colour.

Electronic Control Unit

The ECU is the core component of the ABS system. Wheel speed sensor signal are the input to the Electronic Control Unit. The ECU computers wheel speeds, wheel deceleration and acceleration. If any wheel tends to lock, the ECU actuates the corresponding Modulator valve to prevent wheel lock. The ECU is normally mounted in driver's cabin.

The ECU consists of 7 major circuits,
> Input circuit
> Master circuit
> Slave circuit
> Driver circuit
> Feedback circuit
> Power supply circuit
> Fail safe circuit

The functions of ECU,
> It receives wheel speed signal from the sensor. The wheel speed signals are processed and appropriate output signals are sent to the modular valves in the event of a wheel lock.
> It continuously monitors the status and operation of ABS components and wiring.
> It alerts the driver in the event of occurrence of any electrical fault in the ABS system by actuating a warning lamp.
> It disconnects the exhaust brakes during ABS operations.
> It enables the service technician to read the faults in the system either through a diagnostic controller or a blink code lamp.

Modulator Valve Cable
The Modulator valve cable has thee cores. There are two solenoid interface lines and a common ground line. The inner core sheathing is of EPDM type and the outer sheathing is polyurethane which provide abrasion resistance to the cable.
The cable has a three pin moulded socket is connected to the modulator valve solenoid at one and an interlock connector with locking feature at the other end. The cores are brown, blue and green.

Modulator Valve

ABS Modulator valve regulate the air pressure to the brake chamber during ABS action. During normal braking it allows air to flow directly from inlet to delivery. Modulator valve cannot automatically apply the brakes, or increase the brake application pressure above the level applied by the driver through the dual brake valve.

There is an inlet port, Delivery port and Exhaust passage.
> The inlet port is connected to the delivery of quick release valve or relay valve.
> The delivery port is connected to the brake chamber.
> The exhaust passage vents air from the brake chambers.

The modulator valve has two solenoids. By energizing the solenoids, the modular valve can be switched to any of the following modes.
> Pressure
> Pressure hold
> Pressure release

Quick Release Valve

Quick release valve are fitted in air braking system to release the air from the brake chamber quickly after release of brake pedal. This prevents delay in brake release due to long piping runs or multiples of brake chamber being exhausted through the brake valve.

Relay Valve
Relay valve provides a means of admitting and releasing air to and from brake chamber quickly, in accordance with the signal pressure from the delivery of the dual brake valve.
Air from the reservoir passes through the valve into the brake chamber. The pressure applied to the brake is equal to the signal pressure from the dual brake valve. When the brake pedal is released the signal pressure is released. The pressure in the brake chamber is released directly through the exhaust port of the relay valve.

Warning Lamp

Vehicle are fitted with an ABS warning lamp. It is a LED indicator lamp amber in colour and lights up when the system has detected any electrical fault. ABS warning lamp is located on the instrument panel in form of a driver.

Off Highway Switch
This is an optional switch in front of the driver which can be switched ON when the vehicle is operating off highway. In this mode, ABS control will; allow higher wheel slip to achieve shorter stopping distance than with normal ABS control.

Blink Code Switch
A momentary switch that grounds the ABS Indicator Lamp output is used to place the ECU into the diagnostic blink code mode and is typically located on the vehicle's dash panel.

What is difference between 2 stroke engine and 4 stroke engine

Difference Between 2 Stroke and 4 Stroke Engines

In this post I am going to tell you about the difference between two stroke and four stroke engines.

               Two Stroke Engine

Four Stroke Engine

Today I am going to tell you about main difference between 2 strokes vs 4 stroke engines. We all heard about both of these engines but few of us know the basic differences between them. Before discussing on this topic first you should know about stroke.

The stroke in an engine is the distance covered by the piston from top dead center to the bottom dead center. In simple words, stroke is the distance of cylinder between piston moves. If a piston moves 2 times in the cylinder, that means, engine is known as two stroke engine and if it moves 4 times in a four stroke engine. The crankshaft rotates one time between 2 strokes.

Difference between 2 Stroke and 4 Stroke Engine

The basic and main difference between two stroke and four stroke engine is that the crankshaft complete one revolution in one power stroke in 2 stroke engine and complete 2 revolution in one power stroke in four stroke engine. So the 2 stroke engine give high power compare to 4 stroke engine but the 4 stroke engine is more fuel efficient. There are many other differences which are given below.

Difference between 2 Stroke vs 4 Stroke Engine

S. No.

Two Stroke Engine

Four Stroke Engine

1.

It has one revolution of crankshaft within one power stroke.

It has two revolution of crankshaft between one power strokes.

2.

It can generate high torque compare to 4 strokes engine.

It generates less torque due to 2 revolution of crankshaft between one power strokes.

3.

It used port to inlet and outlet of fuel.

It used valve to inlet and outlet.

4.

2 stroke engines require lighter flywheel compare to other engines because it generates more balanced force due to one revolution for one power stroke.

It requires heavy flywheel because it generates unbalance force due to two revolutions for one power stroke.

5.
The charge is partially burn and mix with the burn gases during inlet. It is due to port mechanism.

In four stroke engine charge is fully burn and does not mix with burn charge in ideal condition.

6.

Easy lubrication due to lubrication oil mix with the fuel.

Comparatively complicated lubrication.

7.

More lubricating oil requires because some oil burns with fuel.

Comparatively less lubricating oil requires.

8.

These engines give less thermal efficiency.

These engines give more thermal efficiency.

9.

It has high power to weight ratio compare to others.

4 stroke engines have less power to weight ratio.

10.

It creates more noise.

It is less noisy.

11.

Two stroke engines are less efficient and generate more smoke.

Four stroke engines are more efficient and generate less smoke.

12.

These engines are comparatively cheaper.

These engines are expansive due to valve and lubrication mechanism.

13.

These engines are easy to manufacture.

These engines are comparatively hard to manufacture.

14.

These engines are generally lighter.

These engines are comparatively heavier than 2 strokes due to heavy flywheel and valve mechanism.

15.

These are mostly used in ships, scooters etc.

These engines mostly used in car, truck, and other automobiles.

16.

Due to poor lubrication more wear and tear occurs

Less wear and tear occurs.

These are all about between difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engine. If you have any query regarding this article, asks by commenting.
